I get by with a little help from my friends

Team Projects

Like knitalongs, team projects are a great way of forging firm friendships and team spirit.
If you have group members who prefer to sit on the periphery it's a good way
of encouraging their involvement. Although involvement should always be optional!

Team projects have the advantage over knitalongs in that all levels of ability can be catered for. Like knitalongs they can be used to learn new skills, but in this case the skill doesn't have to be the same one. Each participating member can decide on their own new technique to master and draw on the expertise of the rest of the group for advice.

Ideas for team projects

Mentoring
Set up a peer-to-peer learning or a mentoring scheme to enable new knitters and beginners to develop their skills.

Fundraising
Fundraising for the group could be another team activity.

Blanket squares
Knitting blanket squares is a great project to start with. Beginners can practise their new found skills whilst more experienced knitters can experiment with different techniques, yarns and textures. These squares can then be sewn into blankets for charity. There are many organisations which welcome donations of knitted blankets. These include the RSPCA homeing centres, Elderly Care wards in hospitals, care homes and Special Care Baby units (NICU). Elderly Care wards and care homes like lap blankets to cover knees and
legs, whilst sitting in chairs or wheelchairs, whilst NICUs are always desperately short of
soft tiny blankets for their incubator babies. These are best knitted in one larger rectangle
with no seams.

Acrylic yarn is best for these blanket projects as it enables the items to be machine washed at a reasonably high temperature and minimises the risk of alergic reaction to wool or hand dyed yarn!

Further ideas for team projects will be posted on this page so keep checking in.
